Former White House national security adviser John Bolton has asked a federal court to dismiss the Justice Department’s lawsuit over the release of his book, CNN reported.

"If the First Amendment stands for anything, it is that the Government does not have the power to clasp its hand over the mouth of a citizen attempting to speak on a matter of great public import," Bolton's team wrote to the DC District Court on Thursday. "It is difficult to conceive of speech that is closer to the core of the First Amendment than speech concerning presidential actions in office, including actions at the heart of the President's impeachment, and it is difficult to conceive of a greater attack on the First Amendment than the suppression of that speech in the service of a reelection campaign."

The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit requesting a restraining order to publish Bolton's book, “The Room Where It Happened,” which is due to be released on June 23.

The White House insisted that Bolton's memoirs contain classified information.

Bolton’s book contains numerous scandalous accusations against Trump, including the fact that Trump asked Chinese President Xi Jiping to help win the re-election and that he tried to intervene in criminal investigations against companies related to Turkey.
