French authorities push for more tightening of mask-wearing rules amid a spike in COVID-19 cases, the Associated Press reported.

That being said, France still plans to resume classes in schools across the country in two weeks.

Labor Minister Elisabeth Borne said the government is committed to avoiding a new nationwide quarantine that is hampering the economy and threatening jobs.

A spike in COVID-19 cases has been recorded in France in recent weeks amid mass gatherings of people at weddings and other family celebrations, as well as joint summer vacations with friends.

The country reported 3,310 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday, bringing the total number to 30,400.
