The United States will closely monitor the 'terrible' situation in Belarus, Reuters reported referring to the US President Donald Trump.

"It's terrible. That's a terrible situation, Belarus. We'll be following it very closely," Trump said.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Saturday that the United States is discussing the situation in Belarus with the European Union.

He noted that Washington is monitoring the situation in Belarus and that the purpose of the US-EU contacts is to "try to help as best we can the Belarusian people achieve sovereignty and freedom."
