The UK is considering abandoning tanks as part of a proposal to modernize the armed forces, The Times reported.

According to the newspaper, the country's government is exploring such a possibility due to the rising cost of upgrading the Challenger 2 tanks and the UK Armed Forces Warrior infantry fighting vehicles, which were deemed obsolete last year.

The UK Ministry of Defence believes that the changing nature of warfare requires large investments in cyber weapons, space, and other advanced technologies, the newspaper writes.

The discussion on ditching the tanks is reportedly part of a government review related to foreign policy, defense and security, due to end in November.

While there is still an opportunity to upgrade the Challenger 2 or buy a Leopard 2 tank from Germany, the UK is already seeking the opinion of NATO partners on a proposal to abandon heavy armored vehicles and revise its military contribution to the alliance, the newspaper added.

Under the new proposal, the UK will focus on leadership in ground attack aircraft and will offer its allies 50 Apache helicopters, as well as heavy tanker and reconnaissance helicopters.
