Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party will elect a new prime minister in mid-September, Kyodo News reported.

Outgoing PM Shinzo Abe has declined from naming his successor.

Abe resigned due to health problems. He has been suffering from ulcerative colitis for many years, and the disease has recently further deteriorated his health condition.
