Mexico's lower house of Congress on Wednesday approved the lifting of the head of state's immunity. The corresponding initiative was supported by the overwhelming majority of the deputies, TASS reported.

With 420 votes in favor, no opposition, and 15 abstentions, the plenary meeting approved the amendment of articles of the constitution numbered 108 and 111, reads a message posted on Twitter by the Chamber of Deputies.

The lifting of the judicial immunity of the head of state was one of the election promises of the incumbent President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. He took over the country on December 1, 2018, for a six-year term.
