The opposition government of General Khalifa Haftar in the east of Libya has resigned after a series of protests in Benghazi erupted over deteriorating housing conditions and corruption, the BBC reported.

The resignation of the government must be approved by the parliament in Tobruk.

Over the weekend, protesters in Benghazi set fire to the government headquarters building.

Besides, there were clashes between protesters and Haftar's security forces.

The UN Mission in Libya expressed concern over the death of a civilian.

AFP reports that officers opened fire on the protesters, who blocked their way to the police station. Five people were injured.
