YEREVAN. - Releasing political prisoners is a positive fact, but the way it is done is unacceptable, informed head of the opposition Heritage group in parliament Stepan Safaryan to Armenian News-NEWS.am.
“I cannot assess ambiguously without having seen the text, however, releasing political prisoners is a great asset,” stated Safaryan. “In addition, amnesty is forgiveness for a crime not a justification.”
Armenia had political prisoners after elections in 2003, however, later they were released. In 2008 after presidential elections more people were sentenced and considered political prisoners. Some of them were released earlier and the rest will be released in the coming days. However, following this tradition, Armenia will always have political prisoners, added Safaryan.
