Eduard Sharmazanov, speaker of the former ruling Republican Party of Armenia; Ishkhan Saghatelyan, a representative of the Armenia Supreme Body of the opposition Armenian Revolutionary Federation-ARF Dashnaktsutyun Party; Suren Surenyants, a political scientist; and Davit Hambardzumyan, Mayor of Masis city have been detained. Lawyer Tigran Atanesyan said this in a conversation with journalists.
"They are being detained under an article, according to which the punishment is two months of arrest. (…). All active politicians are being detained in order to deprive people on the streets of their leadership," he said.
Atanesyan said that Davit Hambardzumyan was detained under a Criminal Code article that does not envisage imprisonment, and the maximum sentence is two months in prison.
Atanesyan emphasized that Hambardzumyan has a minor child, whereas he was detained under the aforesaid article attributed to him, which is illegal.
The attorney added that they will appeal the decision on detention.
