YEREVAN. – Based on the previous experience, French Senate considered unnecessary adoption of new bill penalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide, said France’s Ambassador to Armenia Henri Reynaud.
Asked to comment on Senate’s decision, taking into account that the bill penalizing denial of Holocaust was already adopted, French Ambassador said being representative of executive branch of power he cannot comment on the actions of lawmakers.
Reynaud said that Justice Minister of France is instructed to prosecute and punish each case of Genocide denial. Put it otherwise, there are enough mechanisms to punish such cases without adoption of relevant law, he added.
On May 4 French Senate rejected the bill penalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Empire with 196 votes “against” and 74 “for”.
