Israel and Kosovo have established diplomatic ties at an online event as part of a US-brokered deal, AP reported.

Israel sees its new ties with Kosovo as part of a broader normalization of relations with Arab and Muslim countries, in accordance with agreements initiated by former US President Donald Trump.

During the signing ceremony, assisted by Zoom, Israeli FM Gabi Ashkenazi said the new ties are historic and reflect changes in the region, as well as in the relationship of the Arab and Muslim world with Israel.

Ashkenazi said he had received an official request from Kosovo to open an embassy in Jerusalem, which the Israeli authorities hope will open by the end of March.

The ceremony included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque that will be installed at the entrance to the Kosovo embassy in Jerusalem after the opening, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said.

Kosovo FM Meliza Haradinaj-Stublla, in turn, said Kosovo and Israel are linked by historical ties and both of them have witnessed a long and difficult path towards becoming a state.
