Protests have erupted in a popular resort in southern Chile after a police officer shot and killed a street performer in a calm village, prompting the government to call an emergency meeting on Saturday, Reuters reported.

On Friday evening, protesters attacked a number of public buildings in the city of Panguipulli, including the headquarters of the municipality.

Protesters also set up burning barricades and threw stones at the police station, local media reported.

Chilean police detained an officer implicated in the shooting while investigating, officials said, noting protests had slowed down the collection of evidence.

The country's interior minister, Rodrigo Delgado condemned the arson and pledged that justice would prevail over the incident involving a police officer.
