United Nations Special Rapporteur Alena Douhan published a tough report on the international pressure campaign against Venezuela, which calls on the US, the UK, and the EU to lift devastating economic sanctions, CNN reported.
Speaking Friday in Caracas, she said the foreign sanctions violated international law and exacerbated the economic crisis in Venezuela with ineffective and insufficient humanitarian measures.
Its preliminary report, released Friday, presents a grim picture of a nation plagued by shortages of food or electricity, water, and limited or no access to medicines and vaccines.
Her report emphasizes that existing disasters are compounded by unilateral sanctions increasingly imposed by the US, the European Union, and other countries.
Such sanctions have a devastating effect on a wide range of human rights, especially the right to food, the right to health, the right to life, the right to education, and the right to development, she said.
According to the International Organization for Migration, more than five million Venezuelans left the country because of the harsh living conditions.
