An unexpected turn of events occurred at Saturday’s impeachment trial of former US President Donald Trump, when the Senate unanimously voted to call witnesses in connection with the role of the former president in the attack on the Capitol, Reuters reports.
A total of 55 senators voted in favor of calling witnesses, whereas 45—against.
This means that the decision on Trump's case will hardly be made on Saturday.
The move sparked a clash in the Senate and could thwart Democrat President Joe Biden's efforts to get his Cabinet approved and to surmount the controversy surrounding his predecessor by pushing forward the legislative agenda for the mitigation of the consequences of COVID-19 and economic recovery.
There was chaos in the Senate during and after the vote. The senators were obviously bewildered, and senators Ron Johnson and Mitt Romney even started heated debates.
