The administration of US President Joe Biden is considering the introduction of sanctions in connection with the Nord Stream 2 project and has begun talks with Berlin on this matter, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources.
The talks include threats of sanctions against companies involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2, a German official said.
The administration has a deadline on Tuesday when it should release a list of companies that could be a potential target of US sanctions. The United States can also refuse to impose sanctions in connection with national interests.
According to newspaper sources, members of the National Security Council met to discuss the pipeline, including Germany's willingness to impose a moratorium on the project.
Earlier, the Handelsblatt newspaper reported on the closed proposals of the US administration to Berlin in connection with the possible lifting of sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
