YEREVAN. – A march to protect stray and wild animals was held in Yerevan on Saturday.

The action’s objective was to draw attention to problems related to killings of animals.

The participants handed a letter to the National Assembly and Yerevan municipality demanding a legislative ban on animal cruelty.

Armenia is the only state among post Soviet countries with legislation having no provision on animal cruelty.

According to official information, 70,000 dogs were killed and 30,000 sterilized in Armenia over the recent five years. However, animal protectors do not consider these figures reliable and offer their own program to tackle the problem.
