Russia hopes Armenia will observe the agreement on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, regardless of the events unfolding in Yerevan. This is what Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Russian State Duma Valentina Matviyenko told RIA Novosti.

“We really hope that the leaders of Armenia take responsibility, regardless of the development of events. Any movement or step that contradicts this agreement may lead to a big tragedy,” she said.

The parliamentary speaker reminded that the signing of the agreement helped stabilize the South Caucasus. “The processes continue, but the important thing is that the agreement was reached, and now we need to aspire to make sure it continues to be implemented,” Matviyenko emphasized.

Touching upon the current situation in Armenia, Matviyenko stated that Armenia hasn’t addressed Russia for assistance. “Whatever is happening in Armenia is Armenia’s domestic affairs. The Armenian leadership and my counterpart (Speaker of the Parliament of Armenia) haven’t asked Russia for assistance in any regard,” she said and emphasized that Russia never becomes entangled in the domestic affairs of sovereign states. “Of course, we are following all this with concern, and we are interested in a speedy stabilization of the situation in Armenia. This is important for Armenia and the Armenian people, as well as for stability in the region,” she added.
