Italian president Sergio Mattarella was vaccinated against coronavirus infection on Tuesday, the presidential Quirinal Palace reported.

The leader received the first dose of the drug as part of the vaccination campaign for people born in 1941 and earlier.

According to local media reports, Mattarella was vaccinated with Moderna's vaccine.

The Italian authorities have set the task of vaccinating at least 70% of the population and achieving the formation of collective immunity by the fall. Over 5.5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been distributed across the country as of Tuesday, according to the Italian health ministry.
