Measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus in Germany have saved more than 100,000 lives since the start of the pandemic, Robert Koch Institute's head Lothar Wieler noted.

He noted that his agency calculated that the mortality rate from COVID-19 infection for Germany is about 1.14%, which means that the spread of the virus throughout the country could lead to more than 800,000 deaths, AP reported.

“In our country, we saved ten thousands, if not (a) hundred thousand lives already by these public health measures,” said Wieler, who heads the Robert Koch Institute.

Over the past day, 14,356 confirmed cases and 320 deaths were detected in Germany, as a result of which the total number of cases exceeded 2.5 million cases, of which 72,810 were deaths.
