South Korea will suspend defense engagement with Myanmar and ban arms exports to the country following a military coup and violent crackdown on protests, Reuters reported referring to the MFA.

Seoul will restrict exports of other strategic goods, review development assistance, and provide humanitarian benefits for Myanmar citizens so that they can stay in South Korea until the situation improves.

Despite repeated demands from the international community, including South Korea, the number of victims in Myanmar is growing due to violent actions by the military and police authorities, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The last export of defense products from South Korea to Myanmar was in 2019, but Seoul still spends millions of dollars on development projects.

The statement said the South Korean government will reconsider some unspecified development cooperation with Myanmar but will continue projects that are directly related to the livelihoods of Myanmar's citizens and humanitarian aid.
