Sri Lanka will ban the burqa and close more than 1,000 Islamic schools, Reuters reported referring to Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera.

Weerasekera said at a press conference that on Friday he signed a document for cabinet approval prohibiting the wearing of a veil that covers the face for reasons of national security.

The wearing of the burqa was temporarily banned in the country in 2019 after Islamic militants blew up churches and hotels, killing more than 250 people.
