YEREVAN. – It has recently become known that US President Joe Biden is going to recognize the Armenian Genocide, and the April 24 message will be one of such manifestations. The director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, turkologist Ruben Safrastyan told this to a press conference on Wednesday.
According to the area specialist, the US policy is changing considerably with Biden’s coming to power. "We are becoming witnesses to a change in US strategy on a global scale. The center of Washington's foreign policy is moving to the Pacific region. This means that the Middle East, which the US was giving priority importance to for decades, is no longer so in Washington's approach. This, in turn, indicates that Turkey's importance in US foreign policy is diminishing," he added.
Safrastyan noted that after Biden's coming to power, the Turkish leadership is trying to have a telephone conversation with him, but so far there has been no response from Washington. "Besides, a large number of US parliamentarians have recently petitioned to the [US] president with a call to recognize the Armenian Genocide. This is a very significant fact, given that in recent times the relations between the two [US political] parties have become extremely tense. Another signal is that the Biden administration is talking about strengthening the human rights ‘line.’ This also increases the chances of [US formally] recognizing the Armenian Genocide, as this issue is viewed in the context of human rights," the turkologist said.
At the same time, Safrastyan noted that the policy of Armenian Genocide recognition by the great powers is based on their geopolitical approaches.
To note, American political scientist Ian Bremmer recently wrote on Twitter that the US will officially recognize the Armenian Genocide.
