The EU must ensure the 'credible implementation' of a dual approach to relations with Turkey, based on the prospect of deeper trade ties with the threat of economic sanctions, Reuters reported referring to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Mitsotakis discussed the EU's position on Turkey with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis. 

"We agreed with the (Cypriot) President that at tomorrow 's European Council our two countries, as well as the union as a whole, must insist on the credible implementation of the dual track approach," Mitsotakis said after meeting Anastasiades on the sidelines of bicentennial celebrations of Greece's independence from the Ottoman empire in 1821.

Anastasiades said that any decision or announcement at the summit must fully comply with the report of the European Commission and the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell.

EU leaders are gathering at a summit this week to discuss a proposal for closer economic ties with Ankara and sanctions if Turkey goes against EU interests.
