France's parliament passed a security law expanding police powers despite criticism from civil rights activists who fear it threatens efforts to condemn police abuse, AP reported.

The bill was approved by 75 votes in favor and 33 against in the National Assembly, where the party of French President Emmanuel Macron, which proposed the measure, has an overwhelming majority. The Senate has already passed the law.

Opponents say the new bill is still vague. They also fear that it will intimidate people who are trying to combat police abuse and discrimination.

The Macron government said the law was needed to better protect police from threats and attacks from violent groups and escalating harassment on social media.
