German Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth Franziska Giffey has submitted her resignation in connection with the scandal surrounding her degree previously obtained at the Free University (FU) Berlin, Focus magazine reported.

Earlier, the German media reported that a special commission of the university spoke in favor of depriving the minister of his academic degree. Earlier, Giffey was nominated by the Berlin branch of the Social Democratic Party of Germany as the leader of the electoral list in the elections to the Berlin House of Representatives in the fall and as a candidate for the burgomaster.

It is known that the special commission of the Free University presented its decision to the presidium on May 5, there is no official information on the content of this document. However, it was reported that the minister was given four weeks to make a counter statement. The university refuses to comment to the press pending a final decision.
