US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says the United States will reopen its Consulate General in Jerusalem, AP reports.

The Consulate General has served as an autonomous institution for a long time and has been responsible for the diplomatic relations with the Palestinians, but former US President Donald Trump lowered its status and placed it under the control of the US Ambassador to Israel when the embassy was moved to Jerusalem. Trump’s act upset the Palestinians who view East Jerusalem as a seized territory and the capital of their future state.

After a meeting with President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, Blinken announced the decision to open the Consulate General, yet failed to state the specific dates.
