International pressure on Azerbaijan continues to grow, and Baku will have to cede sooner or later. This is what acting Foreign Minister of Armenia Ara Aivazian said during a question-and-answer session with government officials in parliament today.

Aivazian particularly recalled that the resolution of the European Parliament on the immediate return of prisoners of war and civilians kept as hostages was adopted by an overwhelming majority of votes. He added that it might turn out that the issue of captives became a secondary issue after escalation of the situation on Armenia’s border.

“The Armenian side continues to raise the issue during all meetings with international partners. The pressure on Azerbaijan is growing, and there is consensus in the international arena. Azerbaijan will have to accept the fact that there are issues, starting from humanitarian issues and ending with its encroachments on the sovereign territory of Armenia,” Aivazian said.

Aivazian also mentioned that the countries of the region have also expressed their principled position on the issue and recalled that the visit of Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to Armenia was not planned.

“The visit goes to show Tehran’s concern about regional security issues. Armenia noticed that the Armenian and Iranian governments’ positions are similar, and the Iranian FM stated that Armenia’s territorial integrity is a red line for Iran,” he added.
