Sweden's Defense Minister demanded an explanation from Denmark as to why the country's intelligence services helped the United States spy on European leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, more than seven years ago, AP reported.

Earlier, Danish MP Karsten Honge announced his intention to send inquiries to the Ministers of Defense and Justice in this case. 

The government needs to explain why Denmark is acting as a voluntary tool for US intelligence and what this will mean for cooperation with Denmark's neighbors, he said.

Danish broadcaster DR reported yesterday that the Danish military intelligence service in 2014 conducted an internal investigation into whether the US national security agency used its cooperation with the Danes to spy against Denmark and neighboring countries. The investigation concluded that the US national security agency was eavesdropping on political leaders and officials in Germany, France, Sweden and Norway.
