Several hundreds of supporters of the United National Movement Party, Georgia’s largest opposition party, are holding a protest near the building of the Ministry of Justice in Tbilisi, Sputnik Georgia’s correspondent reports from the scene of the events.

The protesters mainly demand releasing former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, transferring him to a civic clinic and calling snap elections.

The protesters, including leader of the United National Movement Party Nika Melia, moved from the building of the Ministry of Justice to the building of the government’s staff where they spent the whole night.

The leaders of the opposition also demand a meeting with Minister of Justice Rati Bregadze to personally receive explanations about why Saakashvili was taken to the prison hospital.

There are more police troops near the ministry building.

Last evening, Saakashvili was transferred to the hospital in a prison of a penitentiary institution in the outskirt of Tbilisi. The justice minister explained this by saying that the Ministry of Justice is concerned about the health of the ex-president who declared a hunger strike 40 days ago.

The opposition insists that Saakashvili be transferred to a civic hospital, considers his transfer to a prison hospital unlawful and plans to hold protests every day.
