Iran and Turkey were linked by diplomatic relations historically, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said at a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu.

Salehi congratulated Davutoglu on victory of Justice and Development Party in parliamentary elections, stressing that his visit to Iran is a good start for further cooperation between the two countries.

“We have discussed regional developments and the situation in Syria. It was noted that the situation in the region affects the whole world,” said Iranian FM.

Salehi said that at present the trade turnover between Iran and Turkey amounts to $14 billion, expressing hope it will reach $30 billion in coming years.

According to Davutoglu, the officials discussed regional issues and recent political developments in the Middle East and North Africa.

“We hope that these governments will acknowledge demands made by people. Iran’s position must be taken into account in order to strengthen stability and security in the region,” Davutoglu said.
