The EU wishes to take part in the US-Russia talks for easing tension on the Russian-Ukrainian border and on security issues, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Joseph Borrell said.
According to Borrell, if Moscow wants to start considering the architecture of security in Europe and talk about security guarantees in January, these are not the factors that only concern the US and Russia. He added that the EU needs to be present during those talks and that the latter will be meaningful only if they are held through close coordination and with the EU’s participation.
Borrell also said even though Moscow would like to have a situation where both sides would share the sphere of influence without reckoning with the EU, the EU will never agree to that.
