Aeroflot Airlines has canceled a flight to Almaty amid protests in Kazakhstan, RIA Novosti reported, citing the airline's board.

The airport in another Kazakh city, Aktau, the regional center of Mangistau, is not working amid the situation in the country, Sputnik Kazakhstan reports quoting Air Astana.

Earlier, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev imposed a state of emergency in the Mangistau Region until 19 January, which includes a curfew and restrictions on entry and exit.

In the first days of 2022, residents of the towns of Zhanaozen and Aktau in the Mangistau region (an oil-producing region in western Kazakhstan) protested against a doubling of the price of liquefied petroleum gas. Kazakhstani President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev ordered the formation of a government commission to examine the situation. It said on January 4 that it is ready to fulfill the protesters' main demand for lower gas prices. On the morning of January 5, Tokayev dismissed the government and said that the cabinet was particularly responsible for allowing the protest situation to occur.
