Future status of Nagorno-Karabakh is one of the key issues that served for the failure of the talks of Armenian, Russian and Azerbaijani presidents in Kazan, political scientist, expert at Strategic Culture Foundation Andrei Areshev told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Commenting on the current offer by OSCE mediators on the status of Karabakh, the expert recommended paying attention to the statement of Armenian FM Edward Nalbandian. According to Armenian FM, Karabakh will be given status fixed internationally before deciding over its final status. Azerbaijan agreed to this offer in 2009. However, the status means the current status of Karabakh plus its international recognition.

“The offer elaborated by the mediators is mutually connected and Karabakh status is the key issue, this is impossible to ignore. Basic Principles include compromises by both sides. For Armenia it is return of liberated territories around Karabakh, which serve as security zones. Beyond this no compromise is possible for the Armenian side. The matter is whether Azerbaijan is ready to negotiate on complex base of Basic Principles,” Areshev concluded.
