Olaf Scholz was the first German chancellor to start Twitter.

The official Twitter account of the head of the federal government has now its first tweet, in which Scholz congratulates Frank-Walter Steinmeier on his re-election as President of Germany.

"Hello, Twitter!" - The first message from the chancellor ends with these words.

A few hours later he thanked everyone who responded and subscribed to his microblog. "I became federal chancellor with the intention of explaining my policies - from now on this channel will also do so," reads the chancellor's second tweet.

By the end of Sunday afternoon, the number of subscribers to the official account of the German cabinet chief had reached 54,705. Scholz, meanwhile, also has a personal account with 383,726 followers at the time of writing this news.

Scholz's predecessor, Angela Merkel, often sent messages via the Twitter account of Steffen Seibert, the official representative of the German government, but she has never set up an official microblog in her years in power.
