German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Kyiv to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

At a press conference after the talks, the chancellor stressed that Germany supports Ukraine, DW reports.

Germany is right next to you, Scholz said.

Scholz noted that Germany had provided a large amount of financial assistance to Ukraine to make it more resilient to what he called foreign influence.

During his visit to Moscow on Tuesday, he said, he would note Putin the dire consequences of any invasion. At the same time, he said that Germany was ready for a serious dialogue with Russia on European security issues. He also noted that since NATO is not currently negotiating accession with Ukraine, it would be strange if Russia raised this issue.

 Zelensky noted that his country is still seeking membership in the alliance.

The Ukrainian president also touched upon the sensitive issue of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline for Germany, acknowledging that there are disagreements in the assessments of the project between Kiev and Berlin.

According to him, Germany should become a guarantor of gas transit through Ukraine.

Scholz said that Berlin would provide a loan of 150 million euros to Kyiv.
