The European Commission will propose a new mechanism for punishing the spread of disinformation around the world, Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said, Reuters reports.

Borrell told the European Parliament that the EU should be able to freeze assets and ban travel to the EU of those deemed responsible to draw attention to such misuse of information to manipulate and mislead.

He cited Russian state broadcaster Russia Today and news agency Sputnik as examples of tools to promote this narrative in order to manipulate and mislead Russians in connection with the Ukrainian crisis.
