The new type of submarine Taigei was officially accepted into the Japanese navy on Wednesday.

The flag-raising ceremony was held at the Yokosuka Naval Base at the entrance to Tokyo Bay, the Kyodo news agency reported.

Taigei (Big Whale) is the 22nd attack submarine of the Japanese Navy. This is a diesel-electric submarine of a new type, the first in its series.

She has a displacement of 3,000 tons and a length of 84 meters. The Taigei is equipped with a new type of lithium-ion battery, which is said to have significantly increased its ability to stay underwater continuously. It is also characterized by increased noiselessness, notes Kyodo. The team is about 70 people.

The submarine is armed with torpedoes and Harpoon high-precision anti-ship missiles. According to the Yomiuri newspaper, the submarines may also be equipped with cruise missiles with a range of up to 1,000 km in the future.
