The temporary closure of 847 McDonald's restaurants in Russia will cost the fast food chain around $50 million a month, AFP reports.

A number of major American brands, including Starbucks Corp, PepsiCo Inc and Coca-Cola Co, followed McDonald's in saying they would partially or completely suspend their business in Russia.

McDonald's said it would continue to pay all of its 62,000 employees and restaurant workers. Other costs will be related to leased sites and supply chain operations, Chief Financial Officer Kevin Ozan said.

"This is a really challenging and complex situation for a global company like us," he said.

Seven other fast food brands with more than 2,600 outlets in Russia could also be affected by the decision to leave the Russian market, even though almost all of these restaurants are owned and operated by independent franchises.

Papa John's International Inc said it would have to cover $15.2 million in receivables related to its main franchise in Russia, which operates 188 restaurants in Russia.

The pizzeria chain also said it had ceased all operational, marketing and business support for and interaction with the Russian market.
