The United States expanded sanctions against Russia to include the heads of military departments, as well as introduced new measures against President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.

The US State Department announced sanctions against 11 Russian military leaders, including several Deputy Defense Minister and Chief of the Russian National Guard Viktor Zolotov.

The sanctions freeze any US assets that may be in the possession of those they target and generally prohibit Americans from dealing with them.

The Treasury Department announced sanctions against four Russians and one organization it accused of being involved in covering up the death of Sergei Magnitsky or in human rights abuses against human rights defender Oyub Titiev.

The Finance Ministry said in a statement that it was strengthening sanctions against Lukashenko.
