Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev approved the "Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Azerbaijan and the Government of Iran on establishing new communication links between the East Zangezur economic region and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan through Iran", Azerbaijani media outlets reported.
Thus, the Azerbaijani leader creates "legal basis" for his territorial claims to Armenia by fixing the name "Eastern Zangezur" in the interstate document. The name was invented after the 44-day war in the context of Azerbaijan's attempts to get the corridor through Syunik region of Armenia.
The document was signed between Baku and Tehran on 11 March, 2022 following the 15th meeting of the Azerbaijan-Iran intergovernmental commission on economic, trade and humanitarian cooperation.
Under the program, it is planned to build four bridges, two roads, and two railroads, as well as communication infrastructure and power supply. The length of the highway will be 55 kilometers.
