The German government on Wednesday unveiled a major reform package to boost renewable energy production as part of efforts to meet climate targets and become independent from energy imports, particularly from Russia, AP reported.

The 600-page Easter Pack approved by the Cabinet of Ministers sets ambitious goals for the expansion of marine energy and declares the installation of renewable energy sources of paramount public interest.

Overall, this package will lead to a significant increase in renewable energy, German Economy and Energy Minister Robert Habeck told reporters in Berlin.

He acknowledged that Germany still has to make a huge effort to achieve the ambitious climate goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2045, and will most likely miss its short-term goals due to past failures.

He added that the crisis in Ukraine would also affect those plans, with Germany using more of the country's coal to fill the gap caused by reduced Russian energy imports.

However, Germany has already managed to significantly reduce purchases of Russian coal, oil and gas in recent months. Germany intends to stop importing oil and coal from Russia this year, and gas by mid-2024, Habek said.
