The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, arrived in Kiev on Friday for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, DW reported.

According to von der Leyen, the purpose of the visit is to support and assure Zelenskyy of his desire for EU membership.

Von der Leyen said she intended to, "present Ukraine's application to the [European] Council this summer."

Among the delegation visiting Kiev is Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger, who announced that his country is donating its Soviet-era S-300 air defense system to Ukraine.

Borrell, who also arrived in Kiev, announced that the European Union was returning its delegation to the Ukrainian capital.

The EU mission was completely evacuated a day after the Russian special operation began.

The return of the envoy will help ensure close and direct cooperation between the European Union and the Ukrainian government, Borrel said.
