Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has scheduled an election for May 21, AP reported.

Morrison on Sunday advised Governor General David Hurley, as the representative of Australia's head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, to set an election date.

Morrison's conservative coalition is seeking a fourth three-year term. This date is the latest available to him.

He urged voters to stay with a government that has delivered one of the lowest death rates from the coronavirus pandemic of any developed country, rather than risk voting for the opposition Labor Party.

This election is a choice between a government that you know and that gets results, and an opposition Labor Party that you don't, Morrison said.

Morrison led his government to victory in the most recent election in 2019, despite opinion polls predicting a Labor victory.
