The German government turned down an offer from a weapons company to repair 100 tanks to be shipped to Ukraine.

Rheinmetall, the weapons manufacturer, said the 100 Marder tanks in its factory could be put on alert, allowing the German armed forces to send an equivalent amount of military equipment to Ukraine.

According to the Bild report, the defense ministry said it would take too long to repair the decommissioned tanks, leaving its own forces unable to fulfill their obligations to NATO. However, the ministry did not send an expert to inspect the tanks before rejecting the offer, according to Bild.

If it’s true that the defense ministry has not even inspected the Marder tanks yet, then this is a scandal, Ukrainian Ambassador to Berlin Andriy Melnyk told the tabloid.
