Germany expects Serbia to align its foreign policy with the European Union if it wants to become a member, Reuters reported.

Berlin said it had taken note of reports that Serbia was receiving Chinese surface-to-air missiles.

According to media reports, Chinese military transport planes delivered an FK-3 surface-to-air missile system to Belgrade last week, similar to the Russian S-300 or American Patriot. The Serbian authorities have not confirmed the delivery.

“As a matter of principle, the Federal Government’s expectation of all EU accession candidates is that they join the European Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and thereby moves increasingly closer to the EU,” Germany’s Federal Press Office said.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock again urged Serbia to join the EU, the U.S. and other countries in imposing sanctions against Russia.

“If you want to become a member of the EU, which Serbia does want, then it is central that at such moments you join EU foreign policy, and sanctions that go along with it,” Baerbock said.

Vucic told Reuters on Monday that Serbia plans to buy a dozen Dassault Rafale fighter jets, which experts saw as a sign that Belgrade is distancing itself from Russia.

China has invested billions of euros in Serbia, mostly in soft loans, infrastructure and energy projects.
