As in the case of demarcation [of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border], the strengthening of the international legitimacy of Armenia's position on the status of Nagorno-Karabakh [(Artsakh)] is extremely important for us. And in this respect, the settlement of the lawsuit that Armenia filed on September 16, 2021 against Azerbaijan with the International Court of Justice [(ICJ)] is significant. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this Wednesday during the National Assembly debates on the execution of the 2021 program of the government of Armenia.

According to him, this lawsuit is based on International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, “and we hope that the settlement of the lawsuit, which, unfortunately, will not be too soon, will be a significant factor in protecting the rights of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians, and will raise the bar of the international community's perception of the status of Nagorno-Karabakh.”

Bringing examples of Azerbaijan's racist policy against Armenians, the PM stressed: "We must use all these facts in detail at the International Court of Justice. We shall make these facts the justification of the need to launch effective mechanisms for the protection of the rights of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh.

And, of course, we shall use these facts to substantiate our positions in the peace talks and ensure their international legitimacy."
