Countries that seek profit without condemning Russia's disgusting war against Ukraine are shortsighted and will face consequences if they circumvent Western sanctions, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a Reuters report.
According to her, the United States and its partners will not remain indifferent to actions that undermine sweeping sanctions against Russia.
Yellen noted that the war in Ukraine has changed the way the world economy is viewed, and the Biden administration has made a strong commitment to hold Russia accountable for its terrible behavior and violations of international law.
The Biden administration will work with partners to further push Russia into economic, financial and strategic isolation, she said.
According to Yellen, the"Russian invasion has prompted many countries and companies to take a unified stand and end business ties with Moscow, which could help shape a global response to other unresolved global challenges. But some countries still stand by, perhaps seeing an opportunity to benefit by preserving their relationship with Russia and filling the void left by others, Yellen said, without naming specific countries.
Such motives are short-sighted. The future of our international order is at stake, for both security and economic prosperity, Yellen added.
U.S. officials began developing proposals for the IMF, the World Bank, and a post-war international financial architecture in 1941, at the start of World War II, she said, and a new architecture is now needed.
