In Turkey, the cost of the Turkish passport for foreigners increased, Sabah reported.

Foreigners wishing to buy property in Turkey to become Turkish citizens will now have to pay more, which is associated with a sharp increase in sales to foreign buyers, especially Russians and Ukrainians.

The amount that foreigners must pay for real estate and pledge to own it for at least three years to obtain a Turkish passport will be increased to $400,000, local media reported, citing a decision discussed at a Cabinet meeting.

Ankara adopted a "citizenship for real estate" scheme in 2017. A year later, it lowered the minimum price to $250,000 from $1 million to attract foreign buyers.

About 7,000 foreigners gained citizenship through home purchases between 2017 and 2020, the government said last year.

In addition to real estate, those eligible for citizenship include foreigners who intend to invest at least $500,000 in the country.

According to official figures, real estate sales to foreigners - mostly Iranians, Iraqis, Russians and Afghans - reached a record 58,576 units in 2021, up 43.5 percent from last year.
