Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi urged Moscow to refrain from any action that could increase tensions in Northeast Asia, noting that Japan strongly condemns Russia's aggression against Ukraine as it shakes the foundations of the international order.
Japan's Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said Moscow was seeking to demonstrate its strength in the Far East region and to modernize its naval power.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that two submarines of the Pacific Fleet successfully conducted test launches of Caliber cruise missiles from a submerged position in the Sea of Japan.
The ministry said that the cruise missiles successfully hit a mock enemy, more than 15 ships of the fleet took part in the exercises.
