Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune wrote a letter on Monday to UN Secretary-General António Guterres urging the international community to provide the necessary protection to Palestinian civilians and their holy sites in accordance with international law. This was reported by the news agency Algeria Press Service.

The letter was sent days after Israeli security forces used force against Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem.

The attacks carried out by the Israeli occupying forces against the sacred Al-Aqsa Mosque and the violence they use against helpless believers are yet another reminder of the systematic violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms, Tebboune's letter said.

These grave events, taking place in a tense international environment, increase instability in the Middle East region and further undermine the prospects for a just and final settlement of the Palestinian question. These actions, repeated every year during the holy month of Ramadan, testify to the repression carried out by the occupier against Palestinian civilians, who inspire respect for their resistance and victims, the Algerian leader noted.

The deteriorating situation obliges the international community to take full responsibility and, through the mediation of the UN, in particular the Security Council, act urgently to ensure the necessary protection of the Palestinian civilian population and their holy places in accordance with international law, Tebboune said.
